Steering tie rod springs

Post by Wiltshireboy »

I have found that I only have one spring out of 4 on the tie rods, is their purpose simply to hold down the dust cover/cup? How necessary do you think they are?

They are necessary to keep the seal cup sealed. If your jeep is a trailer /show queen then they can be ignored. If it is a driver and you want to get some mileage out of them you should get the springs.

John Bizal told me the newer designed cups do not require
the springs.

Wes, I would think if you indeed have a resto class trailer queen those
springs would be required to be period correct. Otherwise
I agree with your post.

I will say I ordered new cups from John and they look a little
different than the takeoffs. I did not install springs as mine
were unuseable, but am considering getting some for the reason
Wes mentions.

I didn't address proper for a factory resto. I only addressed Trailer-Queen which means always hauled around on a trailer but it could be any level resto and primarily addressed wear & tear. I assumed since he was missing 3 springs he had 4 old style boots.

You did just fine with the obvious observation that they should be on a factory resto for the show.

Guys thanks for your comments, it all makes sense to me now. I have one spring with original cup/cover and 3 rubberised ones that (I realise now) dont need the springs. I am using it as a driver so am going to go for the newer version of the dust cover.
