Not the brackets. Not the brackets.
The threads inside the frame for the front shackles are stripped. The previous owner had swapped out to modern H shackles.
Anyone have instructions on how to get the frame insert out? And who has the best insert to replace? Any NOS out there?

Brian, The probably is a wee bit tougher on the M38A1 and the M170. The part in question is not hanging outside underneath the frame. It is inside the frame rail. Brachus12 you need a new A-546 bushing (bearing) and you will have to cut the old out and weld the new in. They can be found new: http://www.kaiserwillys.com/product/530 ... ge_overlay

John's web site shows the external, easily accessible shackle bushing of the M38.

M38A1 front spring. The M38A1 & M170 bury the upper shackle bushing inside the frame rail as shown here at very right edge of photo.

Here's the M170

This is the bushing that brachus12 has to deal with

Some of the weld will usually penetrate past the surface into the boxed area. You may have to grind the edges of the bushing down to a depth of about 1/2 the thickness of the side walls of the frame.

Then using a 1/2" drive socket or a piece of steel round stock that matches the outside diameter of the white circle drive the old bushing out.
