12v Starter? what's it worth?

Post by southpw »

I purchased a L -134 engine a while back and was run in another M38 with a 12 volt system. I removed the starter and won't be using it as the bellhousing I have fits the closed nose starter that came on the F -134 so I will be switching flywheel with 129 teeth and the closed nose starter.
So what is this starter worth? Is it from an MB? how can I determine if it's original or repro?
The shaft has some play in and out and up and down, should it be very rigid?
Here are a few photos. Note: the back plate has broken the tab that the negative cable would attach to.
Thanks
Brad

Is there a way to check if it is indeed a 12 volt starter? I would hate to try and sell it and claim one thing and actually is something else.

A down and dirty test; hook it up to 6 volt battery. 6 volts won't hurt a 12 volt starter, it also won't make it run.

Thanks Don, I don't have a 6v battery but I will ask around and see if anyone has one I can borrow.

not a positive ID but it sure looks like the 6v starter that was on the MB engine I have.

the old 6 volt MZ4113 starters of MB fame had a 12 volt cousin the Army introduced for its 12 Volt conversion MB/GPW radio jeeps. It was an MZ4124.

Thanks guys. Any thoughts on the play in the shaft? I found a post stating in and out play can be up to 0.06" but no talk of the lateral play. Not sure how snug the shaft should be in the housing.
