Will a cj speedo cable work on an M38?

Post by Ryan »

I have a speedometer cable for a cj that I was considering using in my jeep untill I get the correct one. Will it work? It looks like the ends that go into the transfer case are different?

I will try to take pictures tonight.

Are the rear bearing housings that the cable hooks into the same on CJ/M38/M38A1?

No, I had to change from a civy to the early M38 speedo cable WO 801093 (54 1/4 ") and had to change the sleeve and gear. Looking at the ORD 9 Pg.336 the early and late speedo cables used different part numbers for the speedo gears.
Anybody have both the early and late they can compare???

The CJ2A & CJ3A WO part numbers are:

Sleeve- 636396
Gear, drive 4T - A-1511
Gear, driven 15T - A5707

Note: CJ2A and WWII MB are the same except for the driven gear MB uses A-1512 which I believe is because of the different gearing (T84 tranny) and final drive (6.00-16 tires with 4.88:1 axles).

The early M38 numbers are:

Sleeve- WO# 801092, SP# 55-452-2, ORD# G740-7697552
Gear, Drive 4T - WO# A-1511, SP# 18-452-2, ORD# G740-7673166
Gear, Driven 15T - WO# 801696, SP# 18-452-9, ORD# G740-7697553

Late M38 and all M38A1 numbers are:

Sleeve - WO# 806719, SP# 55-454-3, SW# 418991, ORD# 8328481, ORD STK# G758-8328481
Gear, drive 4T - WO# A1511, SP# 18-452-2, WG# J2-169 or J2-169A
Gear, driven 15T WO# 806718, SP# 448361, ORD# 8328480, ORD STK# G758-8328480
