M38 Dana 18 shift knobs

Post by Brumbach »

My shift knobs are stuck on the levers. I can clearly see rust on the exposed threads. I've been treating it with blaster but to no avail. I don't want to break the knobs as they are original. Anyone have an idea how to free them up. Thought about submerging the knobs in boiling water...metal expands, does plastic? Help if you can. Thanks - Bill

PS. I'm taking the knobs off so that I can install the rubber boot, otherwise I'd leave them alone.

You are lucky to have threaded knobs, many earlier units had press on knobs. The plastic will expand with heat faster than the shaft so your plan may work. If not the threaded knobs are reasonably priced.

Maybe it's not threaded after all. Not for sure. If it's pressed on, by what means would it be removed? I've placed it in hot water but it's not moving.

The pressed ones mean my comment of cheap replacements is even more important!
