How much paint for a M38A1 restoration?

After finally deciding what paint color to go with for my M38A1 I came to wonder how much paint am I going to need to order for a complete frame off restoration. My plan was to order all the paint and mix it together in case one can was a slightly different batch from the others that way I won't end up having different color shades of parts. I will be going with Gillespie Coatings red oxide primer and AJP color. I will be doing a lot of the smaller stuff with rattle cans.
So my question is how many gallons of primer and how many gallons of OD color will I need to order to do a frame off restoration and not end up running out.
How much did you guys end up using?

Jason,
I don't think you need to mix everything. Remember in 1950 Willys
wasn't spraying completed vehicles particularly military jeeps.

Parts like hoods and fenders were already painted when they were supplied
to the assembly line. A slight variation in shade would not be out of
the question for large parts.

There are a couple of threads that address this particularly describing
smaller parts from third party vendors like the light switch and so
forth. The various vendors had paint specs but as noted parts could be
slightly different shades. Having a perfectly homogenous vehicle in
factory class resto would not be exactly correct.

This of course flies in the face of most automobile restoration
efforts that try for a perfect factory finish. Graveyard Cars is one
resto show that tried to mimic the factory finishes down to patchy
color inside the doors, and the imperfect paint finish applied by the factory
with the technology of the day and the need to paint thousands of units
a day.

I ordered one each (except I'm using lusterless forest green instead of OD). So far I've used 1/3 of each on the chassis. Haven't touched the body yet. I applied 3 thin coats of both primer and topcoat. I might make it with what I've ordered but it'll be close. Wish I'd ordered two of each. BTW, I'm restoring a M38. It's a bit smaller than the M38A1.

For my M38 I've now gone through about 2 gallons of OD and 6+ Spray cans. That has given me 2 coats on the body; one off the frame and one as a complete unit.

The rattle cans are very handy for parts as you go along. I've done more than expected with cans just because it made sense to completely paint an item before instal. Beware that not all cans are created equal. Some give a finer more controllable spray but thinner (sometimes runnier) coat. Others quickly lay down a lot of paint over a larger area.

I have used 2 gallons of top coat already and have not touched the body yet. Painted axles, frame, engine, bellhousing and small parts. I am guessing i will end up using 4 gallons total.

Thanks for the replies with that info I decided I should be safe with 3 gallons of primer and 3 gallons of color. I'm keeping track of everything I use including spray bombs so when I'm done ( might be awhile) I will post a total of what it took.
