YS950 - Balance Vent - Can I plug it?

Post by Willis »

I recently rebuilt a YS950 and the Fuel Pump for an M38a1. I installed new fuel lines. I have not installed any of the vent lines. I'm curious if I can run the jeep like this for a bit while I source the remaining lines? If so, what do I need to plug?

Currently, I have left the two vent lines on the bottom of the fuel pump open and I plugged the Balance Vent on the carb. I've started the jeep and it runs okay...with an occasional miss.

I have cleaned and prepped the crank case vent valve and plan to at least attach that in the near term.

Thoughts?

Plugging the vent on the carb will cause a lean running condition. At road speed the jeep will quit running since it will not be able to draw adequate fuel into the venturi. Not a smart thing to do.

If you are running the stock 24 volt distributor then you need that vent line now to the wiper T. It cools the coil and evacuates explosive Ionized gasses from the distributor housing.

I would rethink your priorities and get the things connected that are necessary for preventing damage to your engine before jumping on the "Get it running" bandwagon.

Hello Wes,
Can he put an axle type vent in the carb fitting hole short term?

Also, on the fuel pump can those same types of vent fittings be installed
in the vacuum half of the pump until he gets those lines installed?

I see where he said he left them open.

Thanjs wesk. The 24 volt peripherals are long gone on this jeep. What do guys do who are running a standard distributor?

Nothing. The civvy distributors are vented all the time. The reason for the closed venting system on the military distributor is it is a submersible unit.
