Yellow Jeeps

Post by regor »

My 1951 M38, Ser. #MC23945 has yellow paint under the OD. While cleaning and painting the underside I have found yellow in several places and obviously first paint. The First Aid Kit appears to be original (rusty etc.) and states U.S. M.C. In what application may yellow jeeps have been used in the M.C.? Anyone, thanks!

Everything I've read says Willys used a flat coat of 2430 for primer on the M38 except the frame, which was black.

Am I off my nut?

My 52 M38 # 53623 also had some yellow under the paint. Don't remember if it was the first coat or not.

M38's painted 2430 OD at Willys all used the same 2430 thinned out as the primer followed by a heavier coat of 2430.

Before jumping to any conclusions on these yellow claims someone needs to confirm where exactly layer wise this yellow was found.

Most yellow M38's that have been recorded were OD first. Many CJ3A's were converted by Zekely to yellow flightline and carrier deck aircraft support jeeps in both 3 wheel and 4 wheel configurations. Don't mix these up with primarily USAF yellow M38's. The two photos show a FEAF (Far East Air Forces) USAF flightline jeep with yellow over OD around 1951 in Korea.
