Fording plug

Post by 4x4M38 »

The fabled Marine fording plug screwed to the back
of the glove box mod:

I realize it's an auction but I put it in the Knowledge Base
because of the possible interest.

I am pretty confident this is a Marine mod and not
someone's great idea. The most diligent restorer couldn't
get that stencil that crooked!!

We might want to snag these two images and save
them for posterity maybe on Wes' pages.

To me it looks like the stencil is square to the round screw.

Yes it could be squared (centerline of stencil 90 deg's to fitting centerline) all the way around 360 degrees. But common sense says square it to the door which only leaves two options, horizontal and vertical, of which it is neither.

I guess I needed to add a winky face after my message (I thought my sarcasm would be understood by all).

Haha!

I actually read it both ways. Wes took you literally and I snickered
reading your comment!

We have it covered in any case!

Kendall,

Sarcasm just doesn't work on the internet...........believe me, I've tried. Problem is most folks don't type like they talk. Not sure why that is.....maybe it would take a few extra seconds or so. And without physical expression to go along with the sarcasm people just don't get it. Makes you really wonder how some folks' minds actually work. Scary.

I'm being sarcastic. Or am I? Hmmmmmm.

Maybe if we had a "sarcastic" emoji........

I saw that glove box door and was going to bid on it......it would look cool hanging on the wall......but figured it best someone restoring a jeep got it. I know this will sound dumb........but for what component is the fording plug for......meaning where does it get installed?

I looked in the ORD when I saw this door and it doesn't list an early and late door.......just one. So was this door used on special jeeps only? I assume it wasn't used on early M38A1s that came with the fording kits installed.......as that would show up in the ORD......right?

thanks,
bob

The fording plug was used to plug that hole in the bottom of the bell housing. That "holder" on that back of the glove box door was used as a place to hold onto the plug until the jeep went fording. In other jeeps it was stored in a bag in the glove box.

The door in the photo started life as the standard any year M38A1 glove box door. It was modified in the field for the plug mount.
