Oil pan gasket installation

TM says to apply grease on crankcase surface before mounting gasket - nothing more is to be done to the gasket. Recognizing instructions were based on practices and technologies of the 40s - 50s. Gasket in-hand is made from RN-8011. Mfg Interface? Not sure-hard to read. Safe to follow TM or should I call vendor who furnished gasket kit? Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly - the original gasket was Cork - if your replacement is the same go with the TM...

It's made of cellulose fiber.

The sole purpose of the grease was to provide a tacky substance to keep the pan gasket in place while you move the pan up to it. I do not use any grease between the gasket and the block or pan because I do not want the gasket to ooze out between between the bolts as I tighten them. The grease makes it more likely the gasket will move outward if the crankcase gets pressurized like during use of the fording system.

I prefer to use a very light film of Permatex #1 on the pan side of the gasket and then raise the pan and gasket to the block as an assembly. You can also use short pieces of thread at a few of the bolt holes to keep the gasket still.
