I have a 1951 M38, and recently my clutch linkage had broke (at the cable pin connector). I pulled the transmission and found the clutch fork and pressure plate release clips (2 of the 3)in the bottom of the bell housing. The clips are a little bent up from the fly wheel. My questions are: what function do these clips serve? Can I run without these? I have been looking to purchase the clips, but I am not finding them, if needed, any advice on where to locate these?
Thanks for your advice...
Randy

I believe you are talking about the anti-rattle clips? They serve a purpose. As you release the clutch (press pedal), the cast iron pressure plate goes into a floating state if you will. These clips help by pulling and keeping that cast piece against the stamped outer piece of the pressure plate assembly. I had issues with my plate rattling but I found it to be an issue with both the springs and the outer stamped plate.

Brett:
Thanks for the reply, this makes sense to me. I found these in the TM9-8015-1 manual referred to as "Pressure plate release clips" in section 135 -E.

Now I need to see if I can find a source for these...
