Engine lift mounted to head bolts

Post by rgmutchler »

The rear lift connection on my engine lift attached to the head is bent forward to the point that I can not mount the air intake cross over pipe.

I plan on removing it to straighten it but am curious if the straight part that is welded to the plate is at right angles to the mounting plate or if it needs to be angled off square more to the rear.
As you can see the front lift part of it is a little cattywampish, guess it has had a hard life at some time.

Both should be straight.

Here's a few shots of a new one in the crate

Another ORD 9 shot showing they have a slight forward tilt.

The illustrations in the M38 engine manual TM 9-1804A also show a slight forward tilt.

Hi Ralph,
Can you tweak the crossover bracket a little?
It’s just flat steel bar and will take a little bending
or twisting.

I’d try that first before trying to straighten the
bracket. You don’t want to take the temper out
of that eye shaft.

Just my two cents,

Thanks for the replies and pictures. Seems like someone had to study for a minute to .bend mine that bad, or maybe not study at all.

Brian, it is bent to far to adjust the cross over pipe.

Oh, well.

It could be worse.

Some jackass in the dim past replaced my three
longer head studs with standard length studs.

Trying to work up the intestinal fortitude to try
and break them loose and install the correct ones....

Hey Brian, not to hijack the thread, but same boat.....I have a mix of studs and bolts with no lift hook. I understand it should be ok to replace one stud or bolt at a time and torque it back, but three for the lift hook side-by-side at the same time without goofing up the head gasket? My lift hook sits in a box waiting for a better reason to pull the head. 8O

There is no temper (meaning heat treatment), in the steel there; but after you straighten it up, and it definitely needs to be straight, you should magna flux the weld to make sure it is still good.
Poor man's magna flux; put gasoline on it and wipe it off. Gas will seep from cracks.
Then grind it off and re weld it.
Or buy a new one from MM. Which is what I did.
