Yes, the MB vinyl would have been replacement spares, and probably went into service about the same time they allowed depots to use glossier paint to slow down corrosion on Jeeps in the pacific theatre.
I have no data that suggests canvas was ever used on production CJ's.
(That doesn't mean there isn't data out there somewhere...)
