WTB: Heater Motor Resistor Part# 8710856

Post by dayboy42 »

I am in search of the resistor for the coolant heater blower. Most people recognize them from the M151 Hot Water Personal Heater Kits. They were used in all of the coolant heater kits though.

Part# 8710856
NSN 5905-00-777-8491

Typically Marked: 8710856 50 10% MEMCOR 8531 (sometimes 8217)

Wire wound fixed
50 watts
5 ohms
10% tolerance

Google OHMITE L50J5R0

50 WATTS
5 OHMS

It's what I used, they're around 20 bucks.
I think I have a spare if you don't find one.

Outstanding detective work RickG!!! I looked around on the site and found the mounting brackets also. Several places sale both and prices varied also.

Thanks Rick! That will work perfectly. Always plenty of research when your wrenching on these old girls.

Have a great week.

Thanks for the offer Rick but I found one on eBay really quick and cheap. Looks liked you introduced a relay into the system?

That resistor gets HOT. The bare metal clips shown in Dayboy 42's first post photo are correct. I believe that a plastic or rubber-covered clamp as show in the last photo would deteriorate quickly and pose a safety issue. Just sayin'.

Hi David, I worried about that at first and watched it carefully-yes it was hot, uncomfortably hot to the touch but in 5 years time the rubber has not degraded. However I rarely use the low speed setting.

Matt, the relay you see below the resister is my turn signal flasher.

Yes they get very hot; I see them all the time on that big on line auction site.
I got one for the one that burned out on my M37 with the Hunter kit installed under the dash.
Or you can just run it on high all the time.
