Data plate paint removal
I'm sure this is beating a dead horse, but what's the best way to remove paint from dash and fender data plates without damaging them?

DOT3 or just any old kind?
Waving an open jar of DOT3 anywhere near my paint starts removing it.
Even recycled DOT3 is potent paint stripper.

That's a very old question and you can find the replies by googling it or using the search function here.

I did a search and all I found was a recommendation for sand/Paint/sand.
Seems simp!e enough, though is there really enough height/relief on the plates for that to work?
Any other method?
Any one make decals or is it easier to buy retrofit plates (always an option, but it would be nice to keep some originality).
