Which wheel for M38 & M38A1

Post by wesk »

Thought I'd move this conversation here from the Yahoo site.

List,
What are the correct rims that are used on the M38?
I have four that have the slots and one solid.
Thanks,
Jock J. Jones

Good question, I am looking at a M38 with three solid and one slot.

If you guys want factory original style wheels for the M38 and A1 they will be slotted and have a small 1/8" hole next to one lug hole. There are other wheels that Willys supplied as replacements over the years but they are also slotted. If you think on it for awhile when a guy buys a surplus M38 jeep in 1960 and then needs a replacement wheel in 1965 he has a few choices. Buy brand new Willys generic CJ replacement (slotted with or without safety bead), buy a surplus dealer replacement (probably a correct for the M38 wheel but could be an early surplused MB wheel), go to the local junkyard and buy a used CJ wheel (could be solid or slotted, with or without safety bead) (could even be a 16 x 5" wheel off a pickup which might even have the little 1/8" hole). So as you can surmise the safe bet is a slotted 16 x 4.5" safety beaded wheel with a small 1/8" hole next to one lug hole.
