White Powder

Post by lilm38 »

51 M38. Stock 24v I noticed today that my spark plug wells have a fine powder around them. What could cause this? Head gasket? The plugs are new and standard size with the extension adapter which all come as a kit from Midwest Military[image]

that could be fuel vapors, are the spark plugs torqued correctly? I have seen white corrosion coming from ethanol gas before. Other is moisture pooling slightly around the spark plug locations? That is interesting and I have not seen the corrosion in a patter like that before.

What storage conditions is the jeep in? humidity builds up in closed spaces -especially garages where your daily driver comes in wet from the rain and then the heat from the vehicle warms the garage and increases the humidity. Any bare metal will have some corrosion.

Some may think this extreme but I always store vehicles with a dehumidifier and check it regularly during storage.

Thanks for the reply. I changed out the extension kit plugs with an old set I had and it seems to have stopped. Drove it for 10 miles and the fuel pump went out. This the 3rd fuel pump to fail in less than 70 miles of driving.

Hi Lilm38,
According to your photo, you used adapters for conventional spark plugs in your M38. Could you give me some advice or feedback on these adapters? How has your experience been with them?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for using your post to ask about a different topic!

lilm38,

3 pump failures in 70 miles is indeed not good.

1st: Are you sure you are using the correct pump?

2nd: What source did you access to determine the correct pump to use and what part number pump is it?

3rd: Are you sure you are using the correct pump to block spacer with it? What is it's thickness?

4th: Are you sure you have the correct cam?

5th: Are you using the vacuum half of the pump?

6th: Are you sure you have an un-restricted fuel supply?

Just a note, it helps to post a photo of the installed part so we can answer most of these questions from the photo info.
