Willys to Aid Ford (Canada) on Jeeps

Toledo – Willys Overland Motors, Inc. has entered an agreement with Ford Motor Co. of Canada, Ltd. and the Canadian Government for the production in Canada of quarter-ton four-by-four military trucks for the Canadian armed forces, according to Ward M. Canaday, Willys president. The trucks will have the same specifications as the vehicles built by Willys under its trade name, “Jeep,” he said.
Under the agreement, Willys-Overland will assist Ford of Canada in tooling up for production by furnishing blueprints, engineering information, technical assistance and the right to use Willys patents, he added.
Willys-Overland will also co-operate by supplying parts for assembly of the vehicles from its sources in the United States until Ford of Canada establishes Canadian facilities for making these parts. The agreement provides for Willys to receive a special remuneration for each vehicle built.

Good catch. It is very interesting. Most of the info is common knowlege on the Canadian side but most of the Canadian members have varied on the issue of Willys having provided start-up parts on the Ford Canada line. There are a few M38CDN's floating around with the Jeep logo on the front of their tool boxes and most folks wouldn't believe this correct for the CDN.

Also I have never heard of what the renumeration amount would be.

This is what I have stamped my data plate with, based on the CAR of 52-31313... To be hoest I am not sure if it is number 1313 or 313....

I'd put my money on 30313. That would put you in the first month of production where those Jeep labeled tool boxes probably were installed.

With what you are saying, that the CAR number should break down as this...

52-31313 number stamped into the frame...

52 - Year 1952

31 - 1/4 ton truck

313 - Number of vehicle for that model in the CAR

That would change the DOD definately... as it stands now I have 7/52...

Maybe some of the CDN guys can shed some more light on this...

No, I meant 30313. Are you absolutely positive the frame number was 31313? I would guess the Willys Jeep scrip tool boxes would have been used up in the first month or two of production (Feb/Mar) Unless some of the tool boxes made it into the spare parts inventories.

CAR stamped on the frame is definately 52-31313. It is the number on the registration and verified by several different folks...

Also matches the hood number found on the hood...



The tool box was original in so far as I could tell... Spot welded in place and all. I have since replaced it with a repo, but I still have the remains of the box with the vent on the side and the willys script...
