Wes, I could never understand what was ment by a HIGH TEMP thermostate and a LOW TEMP. Is this ambiant temp. or engen temp or what? If I'm always in a high temp part of the country which one should I use. This vehicle came out of Draper Utah where it was plowing snow.

The standard military thermostat was a 160 degree. The high temp would have been the 180 degree. This applies to Jeeps, Dodges, and a host of other military trucks.

its the coolent temp that the thermostat starts to open at! If you live in a cold environment a higher temp thermostat will give you better heater performance. It may take alittle longer for the engine to get to normal operating temperature. a 160 degree thermostat starts to open around 160 and is fully open around 188 degrees. A 180 thermostat starts to open around 180 and is fully open around 200 degrees.

Engine temp. The whole purpose of the thermostat is to get the engine to normal operating temps as quick as possible and keep it there under all operating conditions. Under extremely cold outside air temps it becomes harder for the 160 thermostat to keep the engine temps up high enough. This is why many folks cover their radiator and some of us just switch to a higher temp thermostat for the winter.
