Starter Pedal and Starter yoke lever- 24v starter

On my M38 I have installed the floor cover that contains the starter pedal. It aligns well with the starter yoke lever. I have no electrical hooked up as of yet.
When I depress the starter pedal it engages and pushes the starter yoke lever. When I release the starter pedal the starter yoke lever partially returns but doesn't do so all the way.
I have looked at the diagrams in the ord 9 and the autolite TM91825b and see no return spring associated with the starter yoke lever.
Am I missing something, should the starter yoke lever return toward the rear of the vehicle when the starter pedal is released or does the lever return to its rest position when the starter bendix releases.

You have the early M38 starter there. There is a large spring in the nose of it that is supposed to push everything back to the at rest position.

Those starters have a litany of design issues and those issues led to a replacement starter.

The problem being you cannot simply switch to the new starter design, the ring gear is different as are the mounting bolt diameters and locations.

Up in Wes' photo album he has a lot of detail about these two setups.

Back to the early starter, this is one of the failure modes of them, there are sliding o-rings and more monkey motion than you can shake a stick at in that little chamber of horrors. The O-rings gunk up and then the spring is no longer able to push everything back where it goes.

They are a bear to rebuild. But if you are capable, have tools including a press it can be done. I have several extra that I have gone through that I keep on the shelf to swap out on the two early M38s.

Ralph that’s a good photo of the way the pedal plunger engages with the lever on the early starter motor. I always thought that it looked poorly designed. Any shifting of the body due to worn or rotten hat channels would make direct contact of the plunger with the starter lever very troublesome. Also why is there a hole in the starter lever? Was there an additional bracket for the plunger to press against? ...... Brian

The hole was not used with the M38.

I didn't find these early M38 starters any tougher than the late MCZ starter to rebuild.


Here's the pinion return spring.

The later MCZ starter is actuated by the pedal/lever and has the same issues with alignement.

Hello all,
Just wondering,(and I admit I haven’t hit the books prior to asking this question and I suppose I will be criticized for it... but here goes), if these early starters are “a chamber of horrors” as I think it was said, is there any preventive maintenance or routine inspections we with these early starters could or should be preforming ?
