m38a1 pintle
I want to add a pintle hook to my a1 and was wondering if they are all the same or were there different versions for different years.
1952 M38a1
There were a few subtle changes over the years, but basically a pintle hitch is a pintle hitch. If you are using it as a driver then I would suggest the combo pintle/ball type to add to the versatility of your jeep.
Here's current military surplus stock sale: https://armysurpluswarehouse.com/u-s-pintle-hook/

Here's a more modern combo ball/pintle that lets you tow either type trailers.

The M38A1 used the same pintle as the M38 (assembly is part #7073209). If you are looking for original ones, be aware these pintles do not have the hole in the upper "lock" and the cotter pin as a safety pin (although you will see those types with the hole and cotter pin are often advertised as correct for these jeeps).

Probably debatable, but doesn't a "correct" pintle hitch also have two grease zerk fittings (one on each hinge pin)?
I don't have my Lube Order in front of me, but recall seeing them on it. Might just be my imagination.
By the way...…… this post is in the "for sale" forum?

Don't discount a pintle simply because it has the safety pin hole & pin. Over the years thousand of early Holland Hitch Comp. Pintles were drilled for the pin at motorpools in all the services to insure they conformed to current military safety rules circa 1955 thru 1970. Also avoid shopping by ORD# 7073209 or FSN 2540-707-3209 / NSN 2540-00-707-3209 since these are military supply stocking numbers and their requirements were filled by many different vendors which leads to many subtle differences from original. Instead shop by the Holland Hitch Company part number for the Pintle Assembly T60-AD or AO (Note: Listed as -AD in M38 1959 ORD 9, but listed as -AO in the M38 1951 ORD 9, M38 1956 ORD 8 & the M38A1 ORD 9.). These were also used on the WWII jeeps in a slightly difference appearance as Holland Hitch # T60B.
The semi-official introduction of the safety pin version came with the M151 as it's MS51335-2 NSN 2540-00-835-9039 version. The latest edition of MS51335-2 is MS51335F 1981.
