M38A1 Shackles

Post by lvrnespeca »

I recently purchased 2 M38A1 jeeps. 1 has short shackles 1 has long shackles. I did not believe the long shackles could be stock. But, now I hear about the USMC having "long" shackles and I'm wondering if that is what I have. Pictures coming soon!

Check you ORD 9 SNL G-758 for early vs late spring shackles. There wasn't any factory long vs short but there was an open U-bolt vs plated (often called closed shackle) arrangement that changed quite early at MD11440.

When you say length are you referring to length of U-Bolt threaded arms or height of shackle, bottom nut in spring and top nut in frame bracket?

The original frame I have is the top picture. Someone made some long shackles to I assume raise the body?

If you decide to correct go the lower picture closed shackle route. Better all around and still available.
