I am about to start a very long term (years ) restoration on my 1954 M170 and have a couple of questions about painting driveline components.
My plan is to start with the axles and then move through the drive line to the engine rebuilding as I go. What type of primer would you guys recommend for the axles? Also, is there a brand/type of spray paint that I can use for a temporary top coat on different components that will accept the correct paint later on?

Some purists will cringe, but I used Rustoleum on mine... both primer and final color of Glos Black. Only used that on the frame / drive train parts...
I did use rustoeum primer on some small parts to prevent rust after sandblasting then used Acrylic Enamel for final coat to match the rest of the body...
The Rustoleum was easily available and cheap enough to buy several cans at once, save me mixing and shooting just for small parts and such...
I like a product that I buy at NAPA. It's their "Detailers" line of aerosols, it's a grey self etching primer that drys quick. Very nice for all the small parts.
