Found new stenciling...

Post by 49tandc »

On the M38A1, I am swapping old dashboard for new and was sanding down glovebox door. Saw lettering and then yellow stencling underneath turquiose & primer, but on top of 24052 green. "INSTALL DRAIN PLUG BEFORE FORDING". I'll try to get some pics tomorrow -raining now and back up at the house.

Anyone else see this on their jeeps?

Yes, I have seen it on a couple M38A1s and some of the M37s I have owned.
Neat to find some history!
You did good!

My vehicle is a 51 M38 and I just found "PRICE 2039.94" in a 1" high x 11 1/2" long stencil (white paint) on the vent panel in the center of the windshield. Letter thickness was 1/8".

The jeep also has bumper markings from Aberdeen Proving Ground. Is this "price" number close to the actual cost of an M38 in 1951?

I also have a 1951 M38 and on the inside of the windshield beneath the left wiper motor is stenciled "2,004.00" in 1" numbers. Interesting.

This was something that was done in the 1950s to show troops what the equipment cost, so be careful with it.
I had a WWII M3 halftrack that was converted into a M16 halftrack for the Korean war, it also had the cost stenciled on it.
