Tool box for M38A1

Post by Norton »

I have to replace the tool box on my M38A1 and it seems hard to find the exact replacement, so i wonder what the best option is. If anyone has replaced theirs and could give any ideas i would appreciate it.

Thanks!

I tried two different aftermarket tool boxes and found neither one to be satisfactory so I repaired mine. Originally I didn't think it would be "fixable" but as my restoration project progressed I realized it was going to be necessary to replace the passenger floorboard and floor supports so once I had the toolbox out, I welded new metal on the back from the lid gutter to the step riser and I formed a new front from the floor to the top and welded it at the front top corner. I formed the front with an extra flange that extended under the seat hinges to add a little strength. I then plug welded and spot welded it back in place after I had the new floor finished. I'm pleased with how it turned out. If I can figure out how to upload pictures I'll try to post some.

I'm sure you've got yours replaced by now, but if not - I'm building a rat rod out of an old M38a1 tub and will be pulling out the toolbox if I can do so cleanly (or moderately cleanly). Mine doesn't have a lid, but it looks to be in pretty good shape otherwise. I'll post it for sale when I get it out.
