Engine questions

Post by SDW »

Hi Guys,

I am not a mechanic and haven't been able to locate the answers to my questions so I appreciate any help. I have a 1951 M38 I am trying to get running.

1 - what spark plugs should I use?
2 - oil filter element?
3 - how many quarts of oil will the engine hold after I drain it and re-fill?

Thanks again! This is the best Jeep website out there!!!!

Hi Wes,

The oil filter is a metal canister with a lid that bolts on it. I am guessing that is what you are asking? I need the element that goes in it. I was going to email a picture but the Lee storm is keeping me inside today.

Thanks!
Scott

The filter element is available at almost any auto parts store. There are two sizes. The military is bigger and is a Fram c-4 or equivalent in other brands. The civilian is smaller and the counter people should be able to look it up on their computer if they look for a Cj3A of the early 1950s. I don't know the number for it off hand.
