trying to get a very small pic 124x119 5k from my computer. followed your instructions every which way but lose. photos in my computer do not have URLs. any ideas?

I think if you upload your selected avatar picture to your photo album on this website (once the administrators have set it up for you), then you can select your avatar's URL in the same way that you would when putting pictures into your messages (see FAQ section of this website for posting photos in messages for more info).
That's my theory, anyhow.....
