State VIN versus Data plate S/N

I was curious about something and got my State title Registration papers out to compare the the VIN to the S/N on the jeep data plate. They are close, but diferent.
The State VIN is 36906 on the title papers.
The Data plate is MC36920
Seems odd to me that it was titled this way.

Dear Ken,
I'm in the UK but had a similar admin. cock-up with a M35.
Between the form I filled in with the trucks details, the guy behind the desk doing the inspection and the database a couple of the digits were dropped from the chassis number.
I know its not the same but every time I've dealt with the DMRO the paperwork has matched the vehicle exactly. I'd suspect a licencing office cock up.

In my case this didn't flag up when entered because as of yet there isn't a 'regualr' set of chassis numbers for the computer to check against. ie had it been a Land Rover I was registering the 'system' would have shown it up straight away.

Anyway, by the time I noticed I had a bu**er of a job convincing the DVLA to change my details and issue another document.
To be fair to our DVLA when the registration docs arrive there is a note that tells you check the docs and return them straight away if anything is incorrect.

Ken,
Could be an honest mixup, a swapped pair of ID serial plates or possibly it was registered by it's engine serial number as many Stat Motor Vehicle agencies used to do up through the 60's.

Ken,

Check the engine serial number.

That is what is on my title. I checked into getting the title changed to the data plate, but it was going to be a hassle.

If you don't find the number on the engine, check the frame over very well.

The engine serial number is MC79963.
It is possible that it is not be the original engine either. I contemplate troubles down the road since data plate does'nt match the title. I hate thinking of going thru the hassle of dealing with DMV. Department of Motor Vehicles. I wonder if they have the records of when it was first titled?

Ken,

You could also consider a third option: Stamp the title number onto the frame in an inconspicuous area and show that to the DMV.

I would first contact someone in the DMV to find out the regulations of your state.

You may be able to get the title corrected without too much hassle.
