New Springs-M38A1

Post by timjuhl »

Can anyone suggest a good source of springs for a M38A1 - New or good used would be fine. I'm in Michigan so the closer the better.

The springs on the Jeep now are cheap JC Whitney units for a CJ5 and the Jeep has the "leans."

Tin,
Is your resto using a CJ5 frame or an M38A1 frame?

Wes,
The answer is "yes." We haven't decided yet but if we use the CJ5 frame as a starting point it will be modified to accept the M38A1 springs and repositioned shackles.

Is your A1 frame that bad? You would be giving up the correct boxed frame with machine gun support and correct shackle arrangement for the CJ5 frame.

Until we pull the remnants of the tub off the A1 and do a little more investigating I can't say which frame would be the best to go with. My restoration guy has already talked about boxing in the CJ5 frame and reversing the shackles, etc. and doesn't think it would be that big a deal. This guy is a master of metal fabrication so I'm going to see what he says. Once we get it and the donor A1 into his shop and compare them side by side we'll decide.
