Would the wooden insert in the front bumper have been
painted or left natural??

Mine was painted. Not sure if it was 100% original, but it had the following colours (new to old):
British army green (Bubba??)
USAF strata blue
OD
Natural wood (with dry rot
)

Not sure about factory restorations, but my guess is the motor pool folks wouldn't take the wood insert out if the bumper area needed painting; the wood would've gotten a liberal coating too.

That's an in-service photo, and since those hood blocks are painted, then it's likely that the bumper insert was too.....
