Evening all I have a question I am hoping someone on here maybe able to help me with I am trying to find out the date of my engine but it doenst seem to have a serial number in the normal place the only number I can find is below where the oil pipe ends well just off to the left I hope that makes sence the Number is 638632.

That is the casting number. That block casting was used thru most of WWII and the very early CJ2 and CJ2A's in 1945. The serial location on that block was a small oval raised flat on the right side up high and forward under the oil filter bracket. Most of these castings had a very short flat (left to right) above the water pump. The later version of this casting used on the CJ2A had a larger flat above the water pump and moved the serial number there.

Here's an MB engine serial.

The later 638632 casting had a wider serial pad above the water pump just like this much later M38 block which were 641087 and 804380 castings.
