M38a1 sector shaft

Post by peterj »

I need help from the experts on a steering box.I have a m38a1,as you know the steering sector is nearly impossible to locate.
Could I replace the worm gear and shaft from a m38(1 1/2 in. c/c) and put in a m38 sector into my m38a1 gearbox.
The m38a1 sector is 2 inch C/C,same leghth and diameter.
The worm gear shaft is 7/16 in longer on a m38a1.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
pete

No, they are different parts. If your sector shaft pins are worn, I've read where people had them removed turned 90 degrees and pressed back in so the unworn faces are against the worm. Less steering slop. That might be an option. Replacing the entire steering shaft and gear from a M38 may be another but since the two jeeps have different steering rates, I don't know if that is a safe way to go. Likewise, I wonder about using the steering gear from a CJ5 if you can find one in good shape. Perhaps others will have some better suggestions. I'm facing a gear rebuild on my A1 this winter but I found a less used sector shaft on Ebay along with new seals and bushings.

How are the sector shaft pins held in place? Just pressed in? Welded or tacked? Loctite or other adhesive?

Have you reviewed the Ross Strg Box service manual I loaded last month?

The CJ5 box would work in the M38A1 but it is still not as beefy as the original A1 Box.
