Rzeppa Axel Problem

Post by DanS »

Hello;

I have NOS Rzeppa axels for my M38. The short side works perfectly. The long side binds and the axel will not complete a full turn. I removed the axel and I cannot find the issue. It seems that the axel will pivot correctly, then suddenly bind. I am stumped. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Is your complete drive axle assy early (threaded axle end with nut) or late (free floating?

Do you have the late axle spacer bushing?

Try reading through the civvy manual pages which describe how you can mix and match some early vs late axle parts and not mix others.

They are the early version with axel nut on end. I will look thru the civy pages and see what I find. Thanks Wes.

Can't seem to solve the issue with the provided info. I removed the axel from the dif and it even binds on the work bench. Could the axel be defective?

Does it bind while installed in the housing with the hub installed and spinning?

Are the turn stops adjusted correctly for the steering angle for Rzeppa axles?

Also please keep in mind that NOS from the military means only New Off the Shelf. The material the military units turned over to DRMO for disposal also included rejected material that was NOS.

Yep, binds on installation and on the bench. Does not contact the stop on the axel. I think that this is a defective DRMO part. Now to get the seller to replace it! Thanks.

So you are saying the knuckle joint binds while turning in the straight ahead position as well as in the steered turn positions both on the bench and with the axle/knuckle assembled?

A note on the steering angle stops. They are adjusted and welded at the factory for the axle style that was installed at the factory. If the axles are no longer the same as the original installation IE Bendix vs Rzeppa vs Cardon then the steering limits change and the welds must be broken and the stops corrected and rewelded.

No, it binds when attempting to turn the joint, as in turning the steering.

It seems that when the joint is angled greatly the joint is loose, but stop and then try to angle the joint again, it binds. If I move it away from the bind it loosens again.
