Tie Rod Question...

Post by OKCM38CDN »

I have a bit of slop in the Steering, not much but enough to be noticeable...

I finally decided to do the repairs, ordered a new steering shaft, pitman arm and sector shaft kit... After I got the steering column /gear box out I looked at the tie rods and decided those needed changing also... well I had the heavier military tie rods I ordered from John @ MWM a while back, and started the project... Come to find out the short tie rod tube was the smaller diameter one. So I ordered the heavier one from John, it came in today. I cleaned all my aparts up (the old tube and John's had some old grease on them) got all the tie rods in the proper tubes and went out to the jeep to get them mounted in place...

All went well everything tightened up except for the tie rod on the driver's side steering flange. I have tightened it as tight as I can get it and it still will turn easily in the joint with a wrench... I do not seem to have any movement in the joint. It just will not tighten up hard like the others...

Can I shim this up or should I replace the steering flange?

it seems to be wallowed out a bit and the tie rod end is pulling into the joint more than normal... the cotter pin hole is above the castle nut...

Comments or suggestions...

Thanks in advance...

I'd say if a daily driver or off roader then new socket. If a show or weekender then shim the socket.
