The M38, M38A1 & M170 all use the same muffler ORD# 7375076 and the same front head pipe ORD# 7375077.

The M38 has an 80" wheelbase, the M38A1 has a 81" wheelbase and the M170 has a 101" wheelbase. The middle pipe differs in length on each:
M38 ORD# 7375078
M38A1 ORD# 8329739 (1 inch longer than previous pipe)
M170 ORD# 8333278 (20 inches longer than previous pipe)

I was able to provide you with this answer simply by looking the part numbers up in Both ORD 9 parts books. You can do this if you have both parts books. They are free here on our web site's downloads page:

M38 ORD 9 SNL G-740 - http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules. ... tit&lid=95

M38A1/M170 ORD 9 SNL G-758 - http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules. ... tit&lid=87

The three mufflers are all the same length. It is the middle pipe that must be measured.

Exhaust problem

Post by G740 »

The problem is not the muffler. You have the M38A1 long extension pipe on the M38 jeep and it is longer than the M38. The muffler was the same between these two jeeps as was the header pipe. The difference is the long extension pipe between the muffler and the header pipe.
