body color

Post by trev1956 »

Hi I have a CJ3A ex US Navy with Navy marking 5860 9777. I am close to the painting stage and want to make sure I get the color right. Something tells me it should not be Olive drab but a grey. If so does anyone know the correct color and hopefully how to get reference to the military numbers

Go to TM9Ordnance.com. We have the blue gray navy color along with the correct early 1950's OD to look at.

Hello Trev,

The paint codes for MV's come from the the old WWII individual service 3 and 4 digit coding systems that evolved into the present day 5 digit systems published and maintained by the GSA. The early 50's saw the switch from 4 digits to 5 digits. The last 4 digit system TT-C-595 was replaced by the new 5 digit system which was FS595.

The current issue of FS595C is expensive. Here's a web based listing:

You can pay serious bucks for a copy here:

History of the color standards:

Current color chart for 595B:

Opinions seem to vary a bit but the 4 common Navy grays WWII thru 50's were:
Hull gray
Deck gray
Light machinery gray
Dark machinery gray to mention just four.
