Dana 25 rebuild

Post by southpw »

Just in the process of ripping apart my D25 axle and am afraid the axle is no longer functional. After removing the 4x4 hubs I notice a lot of end play in the axle shaft. I figure I will deal with this (or at least find out acceptable tolerance) later. After removing brakes, knuckles etc., I pull the axle shaft out of drivers side and note the gouging on the shaft. I clean up the shaft and axle a bit and see it is rubbing on the inside of axle tube. Stop and move to passenger side. This side does not have any noticeable gouging.
Below are some pics of drivers side axle and shaft and then a picture of passenger side axle. I notice a taper at end of tube. But drivers side taper is worn in now.
Is the axle shaft suppose to ride on this taper right where it enlarges to accept the u joint? What stops the shaft from going into tube deeper and gouging the tube like this? I don't see any replacement parts for this location of axle so I assume it is not a part that is pressed into axle tube. Any help is appreciated
Brad

Looking at TM 9 -1804B, it looks like this axle is missing the wheel spindle bearing thrust washer. But now I'm getting confused as to what axle shafts I have as mine do not appear to look like either listed in the book.

Sometimes the civilian jeep service manual SM-1002 can be more helpfull than the M38's TM 9-1804B.

The military manual only covers one of the three types of front axles that can be installed in your jeep. The three are not set-up the same way for knuckle clearance & end play.

Also the civvy front axle chapter must be used in conjunction with the rear axle chapter.

You have the spicer or as they are often called Cardon joint axle. If someone added those to an early M38 model 25 you better reset your steering stops or you will break one of them.
