I have for sale what I believe to be a European reproduction of the Ramsey model 50R winch. It is exactly like an original Ramsey 50R in every respect except for the Ramsey name cast into the housing is obviously not there. Also this “repro” winch is made of cast iron, whereas an original Ramsey winch is made of aluminum. I have been told original Ramsey 50R blueprints were used to create this reproduction. If you have been looking for years and as hard as I have for an original authentic Ramsey 50R winch, with no luck this is the next best thing. This winch is currently on my 1951 M38 (see pictures below) it fits perfectly into the winch frame. Output shaft turns freely and all internal gears seem to be in good condition. I have unrolled and rolled back in the cable several times, although I have never put any significant tension on the winch.
I have no idea the history behind these “repro” winches. The best story I have heard was relayed to me by Philipp Duske. Philip claims:
“M38 & M38 A1 surplus jeeps were very popular to wine farmers -> narrow lanes between the grape-rows. Two Ramsey winches were produced exclusively for M38 & M38 A1: model 50 and its successor model 50R. Winches were/are a must for wine farmers: the jeep is slowly towed uphill by the winch while the harvesters walk on both sides and harvest. But, Ramsey winches were not available to them (i.e.prohibitive $ exchange rates). The winch on the photos was exclusively produced for Italian wine farmes (using the blueprints of the Ramsey winch model 50R). Production of these winches seized in the seventies. This winch has exactly the same dimensions (LxWxH) as the Ramsey model 50R. Also the positions of the 8 bolts that fasten the winch on the winch frame are the same. Even the mechanical parts in the winch are (e.g. the worm gear) interchangeable.”
I have no reason to doubt Philipp’s assertion. But it the only explanation I have heard of.
Now for the price… I am asking $3,000 for the winch. I know this seems high…but this is what I nearly have in it. And if you are ever lucky to find an original Ramsey it will probably cost you double this…I know because I just purchased one.
Only the winch is being offered...Not the cable, frame, drive shafts, PTO etc.

Look-out boys and girls, it went on E-BAY.
Lets see how a REPRO does in price against an org.
It was offered here first. I have no connection to this item.
I have mine and PTO to complete the package and are orig. _________________ Larry Richard
