I'm tempted to call this a grill muffler but I'm not sure of the 'correct' US nomenclature.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll all figure out what I mean.

My M38 has the same little clips fixed to the grill as my M series trucks. These are the clips to fit the cold weather padded quilt to the front of the grill.
I have never seen one of these mufflers/blanket/quilts fitted to an m38 but obviuosly they were at some point. These clips look like they were fitted by the US and not while the jeep was in Greek service.
So.... 2 questions, has anybody got a picture they could post here or email me of an m38 with the cover fitted and does anybody make a repro??
Before you ask, I think there is lots of evidence to show it once had one of the arctic heaters fitted, check out the pictures in my gallery of the dash, I'm assuming thats what the extra holes are for but I could be wrong.
Thanks,
Dave.

I posted a picture from the arctic gas fired heater manual that shows the grill cover in place and how to install it. One good sign tht a jeep had this particular heater installed at one time is 4 holes in the cowl top on the drivers side of the vehicle. Many other changes had to be made for this heater to be installed including removing the data plates and individually putting them on the defroster tube, etc. I don't see anything like this in your photos, but yur jeep may have had a hot water heater installed which is very different .

Just as an after thought, there was a hood blanket kit available for the M38 also. Gary

Thanks Gary,
now does anybody know if there is a reproduction available. I can't imagine NOS ones ever come up and if they did I'm not sure I would destroy one by fitting it.
Thanks,
Dave

I haven't seen or heard of repros being produced by anyone. NOS can be found at show vendors occasionally, and used ones. The grill cover usually came with the arctic heater kits and NOS kits if found can be pricey as you can imagine. One kit for an M38A1 sold for 500.00 on ebay in the past few weeks.
