Old Jeep Rendezvous

Ashton, Idaho

What: A gathering of pre-1970 Jeeps for a Rendezvous. Any model, MB's, GPW's & CJ’s to Deuce-and-a-halfs, civilian or military, any condition, from “Rusty to Restored”. If it was made by Jeep before 1970, we’d like to see it here! Public is welcome! No admission charge for Jeep owners or spectators!

When: Saturday, July 6, 2013, 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon

Why:

1. Display your Jeep vehicle, meet other owners, share and preserve the history of Jeep vehicles

2. Optional: drive your Jeep on a self-guided ride in Targhee National Forest to see some of the less visited areas of the Targhee National Forest, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. We suggest either Cave Falls Road to Cave Falls or the Ashton-Flagg Ranch Road to Grassy Lake.

Where: Ashton City Park

How it will be organized:

1. 9:00 a.m. until Noon: Jeeps, from “Rusty to Restored”, will be displayed at the Ashton City Park. The Public is welcome to stop by and enjoy these old Jeeps!

2. Noon until dark: optional, on your own tour of forest roads.

Who: All owners of pre-1970 Jeeps, if it was made by Jeep, bring it! CJ’s to Deuce-and-a-halfs!

About Ashton, Idaho

Ashton is a small town located near the southwest corner of Yellowstone National Park. The Bechler Region of YNP, Jedediah Smith and Winegar Hole Wilderness Areas and Grand Teton National Park can be reached from Ashton via Targhee National Forest roads. Ashton services include groceries, lodging, restaurants, gas, tires, auto repair and camping for tents and r.v.’s.

Email: targheejeeps@gmail.com if you have any questions about the Rendezvous.

The fine print: there’s no charge to join us for this event and no registration required. We are not an official club, just a group of people who enjoy old Jeeps. Your travel to and from, attendance at and participation in this event is at your own risk and your own expense.

Don’t trespass on private property. Know and obey all laws, rules and regulations. Respect the fragile nature of the forest. Travel on established roads only. We suggest you get a Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for the Caribou-Targhee National Forest from their website or office.

We’re hoping folks come to the Old Jeep Rendezvous for two reasons:

1. Meet and Greet other Old Jeep owners at the City Park in the morning.

2. Drive your Old Jeep and see some great sights in the afternoon.

Here are a few of the places you might go. We hope you can join us!

Bechler Ranger Station entrance to YNP, seen by very few visitors

Cave Falls on the Falls River, just up the road from Bechler Ranger Station

Cascade Creek along the southern boundary of YNP

A moderate 45 minute hike down Cascade Creek leads to Terraced Falls

The area around the Old Jeep Rendezvous is loaded with wonderful and scenic places to visit in your old Jeep.

Also, Ashton is about an hour away from the West Entrance of Yellowstone Park and about the same distance from Jackson Hole. The Rendezvous would be a good place to plan a vacation around.

Here’s some info on possible road trips on the day of the Rendezvous:

1. We’re suggesting that folks take a ride on either the Cave Falls Road or the Ashton – Flagg Ranch Road after our morning get-together at the Ashton City Park.
2. Both roads are about 15 minutes out of Ashton. Both are reached by travel on paved state and county roads.
3. For those who decide to tow or trailer to the beginning of the roads, they are both snowmobile trails in the winter and so there are large parking areas at the beginning of each for tow vehicle or trailer parking.
4. Cave Falls Road to Cave Falls and the Bechler Ranger Station inside YNP is a graded gravel road, mostly level with a few small hills. It can be easily traveled in a compact car. We recommend that you allow at least 2 hours for this ride. There are no supplies or services available on this road, so bring what you need.
5. Ashton-Flagg Ranch Road is mostly graded gravel with some rocky, rutted and steep sections. It can also get muddy in places after a rain. It can be traveled in a compact car, but if the driver isn’t careful they could be replacing chassis parts after they’re done. You can either turn around at Grassy Lake (3-4 hours round trip, no services), or continue on to Flagg Ranch (4-5 hours round trip), where gas, groceries and restaurant are available. Flagg Ranch is just outside the South Entrance of YNP.
6. The Caribou-Targhee National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) is a good map to have for your trip. You’ll be travelling in the Ashton/Island Park District. Here’s a link to the online copy of the map for that District. http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5420089.pdf
Both roads are along the southern boundary of YNP. Hard copies of the map can be obtained from the Caribou-Targhee N.F. office. This map doesn’t show Bechler Ranger Station or Flagg Ranch, so you’ll need other maps for them.
7. There are many side trips that can be taken off of each of the two roads. Use the MVUM to decide which ones you might want to take.

One thing to remember:

Both these roads are inside the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA). This is grizzly bear country. While it is unlikely you will see a grizzly, it happens. We have. We’ve learned how to travel safely in grizzly bear country. Most importantly, we make lots of noise as we travel to let them know we’re coming, especially when out of the vehicle. We carry a bottle of bear spray for each person in our group and we make sure everyone knows how to use it. Google is your friend, there’s lots of good information on safe travel in grizzly country. Don’t let the bears keep you from seeing this wonderful place. Take the time to learn how to travel safely in grizzly country and you’ll have a great trip.

A small but enthusiastic group of local Jeep owners gathered for the Rendezvous.  A total of 8 Jeeps came by during the course of the morning.  Along with the owners of the Jeeps there, other Jeep owners came by and joined the conversation.  We all enjoyed a morning of looking at and talking about old Jeeps.

All those who attended said "let's do it again next year", so, mark your calendars for Saturday, July 5, 2014.

We know there are 100's of old Jeep owners in our local area.  We're going to focus on getting more of them to attend.

But we're also hoping that some of you from outside the area can join us.  The little town of Ashton puts on a terrific 4th of July celebration including a Main Street parade, community picnic in the City Park and fireworks in the evening.   Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are close by. Ashton is a great base camp for exploring this magnificent part of the country.

See you next year!
