I have installed a dual master cyl. I want to add a reservoir to eliminate having to go through the floor to add fluid. Just wondering if I can use one reservoir and split the line just above the master cyl. or do I need two reservoirs? Plumbing is no problem. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate them. Thanks. |

Should one of the cylinder halves system develop a leak, eventually ALL of the fluid will be lost from the single reservoir, whereas a dual reservoir will maintain a safety margin for the remaining half, less fluid to replace too!

Thanks capescw. That pretty well answers My question. That would basically be like a single master cyl. At least I haven't got that far yet. Thanks again. |

Actually the dual master cylinder will still retain the fluid in it's chamber for that half of the system. The remote reservoir will, however, deplete itself thru the leaking system half of the master cylinder. This will still leave you with at least 1/2 of your brake system functional.
The problem you must deal with in your proposal is how you deal with each different type or manufacturer's dual master cylinder's lid, gasket and vent system. But it should be do-able. _________________ Wes K

|
|
I recently did this conversion and found that a master cylinder reservoir for a 67-79 VW Beetle did the job for me. There's a partition inside that prevents all of the fluid from going into the leaky circuit. I bought mine from Chirco Performance in Tucson, AZ and the cost was USD10.95. I made a bracket for it that mounts on two existing bolts that secure the glove compartment to the firewall. For a photo, see my album, Page 8, late page: "MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR". dwm _________________ David Manning

bluewatersailor - I really like your setup. I think I'll go that route. I found the reservoir you mentioned. What master cyl did you use? It looks like a VW. I'm using one for a 82 ford fairmont but I like yours also, easier to install the reservoir lines. |

Mine's a European built "OM" brand. They were used on the Fiat "Campagnola" Jeeps and various light trucks. The piston is 1" for both circuits, so the engineering hasn't changed from the original setup. I am confident that you will find a similar unit in the US. Good luck. _________________ David Manning
