I bought an M38 on Craigslist about a month ago, and then I told my wife for Christmas. It is the actually the 3rd one I have owned and started to fix up. It is better than the other two I had, mostly because it is still 24 volt stuff, and it is not rusty. The people I bought it from owned it since 1972. They originally bought it pull a machine to pick up golf balls on their driving range. They brush painted it turquoise and used it for awhile, but then parked it in their garage in the mid 70's. So it literally sat in the same spot for 40 years, until they pushed it outside to clean it up and sell it. It came with an arctic hardtop and windshield frame. The doors, driver's seat, and spare tire were in another building. Looks to have the original canvas on the pass seat, the driver's has been recovered but is in good shape. The arctic top itself was put outside at some point. It's kind of wrecked in a couple of places, but I really like it so far. Not sure if I am going to take it all apart and sandblast/paint everything, or just get it on the road and brush paint it. My other Jeeps I tried to make too nice and ended up selling both unfinished. My dad says I am too picky.

I will try to have my wife help me post some pictures of the Jeep on here. I took some pictures of it with my phone when I bought it. But getting them from there to here is still above my skill level.

My wife does not approve of my covert army jeep purchase, but I think she will come around eventually when she sees how awesome it will be. She really doesn't like to ride in anything with less than 14 airbags and stability control.

We have 3 young sons ages 5, 9, and 12. Hopefully they will take interest in it so I can get some affordable labor.

My Jeep is MC 13149. It was titled as a 1950, but I think it is actually an early 51. I called a guy to buy paint today, and he said M38's were actually painted 2 different colors of OD. Early and then most common Late. Not sure which paint I need, so I am going to sand the hood and see what it looks like.

Willys used one OD color on the Army M38's called OD-2430. It is a bit more gray green the 1953 introduced Army 24087 (looks more brownish). M38's in the Army usually eventually got repainted 24087 in the field. You will often here folks comment on a light base color vs a dark top color. That was because the Army specification for the paint job required that OD-2430 be used fo0r both the primer coat (by thinning it) and the top coat. The extra thinning made the primer coat lighter than the top coat.

MC13149 is an early 1951 unit. The 1950 m38's had a dash serial plate that only gave the year of manufacture and not the month. The early 1951 were the same way until about Apr/May.

Where are you in Kansas City?

I now live south of the Kansas City Metro area just outside of Spring Hill, KS.

Look up Spring Hill Veterinary Clinic, Spring Hill, KS.

We live near 169 hwy and Englewood in the northland, less than 10 min from downtown KC. However, we are moving to Dallas in about 2 and a half weeks. My wife got a job transfer. We can't take the M38 with us right now. She wants me to sell it and buy one that is restored later on. Not sure if I will be doing that, or will just keep it here at my uncle's farm for awhile. I am actually bolting it all together to take pictures of it and move it today with all of the new parts I bought. I have a bunch of extra parts that I am going to post on Craigslist or ebay or here, if you know anyone looking for stuff. Have a nice rust free extra tailgate, an NOS tailgate, NOS whole front floor, a bunch of extra wheels, and a complete arctic top that came off of my jeep, and some small stuff and M38 a1 stuff. I won't need the arctic top in texas. Thanks--Scott
