My jeep is a 1952 M38 Frankenjeep. A prior owner converted it to six volt and I am converting it to 12 volt. I have read what I could find on this site and others about adding turn signals and I'm looking at the following plan. Please point out any problems that you may see.
1. The wiring harness is a CJ3A from Walcks with provisions for turn signals and key start.
2. The light switch is a two position CJ3A switch.
3. The turn signal switch is a civilian 7 wire Signal-Stat 900.
4. The front turn signals are identical to MB marker lights that are 12 volt with a dual filament bulb with two wires so they should be good to go as is.
5. The rear lights are two left side m38 lights with full red Gamma Goat lenses for better visibility.
I have some questions about wiring the rear. Each light has three bulbs with three wires. Wire # 21 to the service tail lamp, wire # 22 to service stop light, and wire # 24 to the black out tail lamp.
I am going to assume that I will not use the # 24 wire or bulb at all since there will be no blackout lights on the jeep, so these wires can be cut and capped.
I am going to cut the Douglas connectors off # 21 and # 22 wires and solder on a standard male bullet connector. The wires coming from the wiring harness will also have male bullet connectors which will be joined by a black plastic double female connector as used on other connections of the CJ3a harness.
I know the existing 24 volt light bulbs will need to replaced with 12 volt bulbs but this part has me very confused and I could use some help. The 24 volt bulbs that I removed have no numbers on them other then 24 volt.
So my question is, what 12 volt bulb do I need to replace the service tail light (off wire # 21 ) and the service stop light (off wire 22)? I assume the brake light one needs to be a dual filament bulb?
Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated. I'm going to try to get this done this week. Thanks, Marty.
