Recently purchased the under hood battery box from MWM for my M38, a very nice kit.
While looking over the manuals to fit it, I see reference to the top cover being insulated.

TM9-8012, paragraph 155.c.(1) on page 198, and Figure 68 on page 199 install and removal instructions.
ORD9 page 168, Cover, box, battery, insulating, assy. (WO-800010, ORD 8673978).

The contrasting colors in Figure 68 seem to show something inside the top of the cover, maybe special paint or a thin panel of some sort glued in?
The figure in the paper copy of the manual shows the contrast better.

Has anybody with an unmolested M38 ever seen this, and if yes, what is it?

Thanks!

Interesting.
Judging from the fact the rest of the box is not insulated I would assume it is to prevent shorts should the lid get crushed down onto the battery.
This is all just speculation on my part though. Hope somebody has a real answer for you.

Found it.

Looks to be part of the Power Plant Heater Kit, seen here: http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7973

Guessing that the Figure 68 label, assembly-disassembly instructions, and the ORD9 description "insulating" are unintentional errors in the manuals.
