Hi Guys,
I am sure you have all heard this one before but here goes.

I am going to restore my dad's old Willy Jeep. The Serial Number# off the plate on the engine firewall is 57748 17005.

The engine is a 4 Cyl. F Head and seems to be in complete shape.
We have owned this jeep for 30 years and it has been stored for the last 25odd years. The body was modified aparently as a Hospital Jeep during the korean war. The body is a bit longer in the back to accomodate stretchers.

Any information on where to find parts, pictures and other restoration information would be greatly appreciated.

Petho.

Thats a M170 Jeep ambulance. The first 5 numbers should be 57248 ( I believe) for a later year M170. It's based on a M38A1 short jeep. They did not build many. If you look on line reports say from 4 to 6 thousand total were built from 53 to 62(?).
If you look back a few posts you'll see my post on my question on model #s and I have a photo gallery started on it (page five). Main parts to have that are hard to get are:
*Reel light
*Seats
*Top bows
* 24Volt hardware (starter, Generator, Distributor,)
* Upper and lower stretcher racks (upper are very rare)
Here's a link to a very pretty one and they also supply the canvas

Your serial, 57748 17005, is a civilian 1959 CJ6. The Kaiser built M170's used the 57248 prefix on their patent plate which is on the right rear wheelhouse. The M170 didn't have any serial tags on the firewall.

Thanks for the reply, guys. I will check the wheel house for the patent tags. The only tags I could find are on the driver side of the firewall in the engine compartment. The plan is to take the next year and research and restore the Jeep.
Thanks again!

She's not a military ambulance jeep. A resto of your civilian CJ6 will be reasonably simple. Perhaps your CJ6 has a history with a public agency such as Civil Defense or law enforcement or Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management where it may have bee converted to a special purpose vehicle of sorts. I would start with your local Dept O f Motor Vehicles and look for a list of previous title owners.
