Hey, guys, Need some help. What is the correct ord # for the early M38 starter? I am converting over to 24 volt on my rebuild and the starter I have is too large to fit into the bell housing. The number on it shows for a 38A1. Any help would be appreciated or a source to buy the correct one. Thanks..Eric

Eric,

This is from the manual. Wes please correct if wrong.

Early is G740-7762616 this is the one in the picture in my manual and matches the one I have for my M38.

The other one is G740-8328132 for engines after 74419. I think that was when the bell housing was changed.

Alan

Okay, I have been checking around and have not found one so far, of the flat end. Anybody got one they want to get rid of, money wise or trade? If not, I guess I can use my 12 volt, got off my underhood battery to a push starter like the WWII ones and go from there..Thanks...Eric

Hello Eric,
The early m38 starter Prestolite/Auto-Lite MBP4301UT (flat nose, small frame 24V mounts with 3/8" bolts) is still available. John at Midwest Military has rebuilds in stock. The later M38 starter MCZ4001UT is the closed nose 24V and uses 1/2" mount bolts. It is the same starter used on the M38A1 and the M170. It too is readily available.

Be sure to copy the instructions for set-up of the new starter in your jeep.

Hi, Wes,
Thanks for the info, however I talked with John yesterday and he no longer has the flat end. Gave me a couple of leads, especially Brent Mullins, but won't be able to try before Tue. Will let you know what I find out. Thanks again..Eric

You may also want to check with Peter Debella Jeep parts or Surplus City Jeep parts. Both require a core exchange, but worth looking into.
