I read somewhere that the Swedish Armed forces used Engine oil in its transfercase (gearbox) to cut down the amount of different oils.
the car was build by Volvo during the late 50's & 60's
We called it Valp (puppy) but I think the correct model name was C303
So my Q is it possible to use it on aWillys also ?
the transfercase oil is getting way to expensive around 100 sek/l ~$15/l , (1 us gallon is around 3.8l or 4.5) my unrestored transfercase like to mark its territory
Since most Willys transfer cases and transmissions tend to share their oil you would then end up with a mix of engine oil/gear oil in both. The transfer case generally only leaks from two areas. The front and rear output shafts. These are very simple to repair.
I would assume under light use the gear boxes would survive the use of engine oil as long as it is not too warm in your area. _________________ Wes K

Both leaks are a very simple repair and can be done right in the jeep. _________________ Wes K

Wes, don't the transfercase pan bolt threads come in contact with the oil?
I have a little seeping also. I tried putting some permatex on the threads to stop the seeping, but it doesn't always work.
What would you recommend for this problem? _________________ Tropical Veteran

I don't recall any impossible sealing issues with the tranny and transfer. The bolt threads do well with Permatex #1 and the gaskets do well with nothing. What often happens is the pan bolt holes take a dimple like set from use and must be flattened and even dimpled a little away from the case so each bolt applies adequate pressure to seal the gasket. Quite often the leak that we suspect is from the transfer pan is actually from the joint between the transfer and the tranny. _________________ Wes K
