Most folks here are only familiar with the military gas & hot water heater kits that are found on M38's and M38A1's. The M38A1 left the Willys/Kaiser factory with no heater installed as did the M38 and the M38A1.

The Harrison line was used on the civilian jeeps.

To install one in a M38A1 necessitates removal of the cowl battery box.

Your best bet for a correct heater is the hot water heater kit covered under TB 9-2855-43 which you can download free here http://willysmjeeps.com/downloads/TB_9-2855-43_heater.pdf

This is the heater kit you are looking for:

Available at least here: https://www.armyjeepparts.net/p-2167-m38a1-hot-water-heater-kit.aspx

Also check with Midwest Military, Ron Fitzpatrick, Rapco and Memphis Equip.

Question please. I've noticed that the later M38's, not M38A1, has a bulge in the passenger rear fender . Was this to facilitate the install of this type of heater and you removed/modified the heater blanking plate? In the downloads it shows the heater unit installed on the floor , just to the right of the shift levers inside the Jeep, not under the hood. Hot water type heaters only. ??????? John

The bulge is to accommodate the power plant arctic heater kit. These photos in my M38 body album show this. This indent appeared in production the same time as the 4 holes in the right step pad did for the Power plant arctic heater kit' electric fuel pump mounting.

Here's the kit instructions: http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?set_albumName=album207&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

The indent was for item B and the 4 holes in the right step were for item D
