You'll have to decide what year your M38A1 is representing because the regs changed several times after WWII. Stars are a field installed item and were not always installed. The theater commander was the authority for deciding if their use was necessary.

The many regs and TB's that covered markings are roughly in this order:
TB 746-93-1 26 OCT 64
TB ORD 1058 14 JUN 63
TB ORD 677 17 JUL 62
TB 9-263 14 APR 59
TB ORD 2300-10/1 2 APR 58
TB ORD 626 1 OCT 57
AR 850-5 15 FEB 45 thru Chg 6 18 JAN 49

Some examples of star placements:
AR 850-5 6" stars on both rear quarters as far aft and high as they will fit. 4" stars on rear panel as low and as far outboard as they can be fitted.

TB 746-93-1 shows one on each front fender front surface, one on each rear side quarter and one on the hood. The smallest allowable size is 6" and largest 36" however the manual specifies the largest size practical for use in the available space,
