I am posting this question for another member who is having problems posting at the moment.

The question is: How does the rear seat mount and does it fold up.


yes, the rear seat mounts to brackets on the side of the inner fenders in the rear and yes it folds up.

The tube at the back of the bottom seat fits into the back U bracket. Then there is a small metal piece (L shape) that bolts into the inner fender panel and over the tube to keep the seat in place.

There is a corresponding bracket that latches in to the front bracket.

I'm curious about the depressions on the floor
ahead of the back seat, as shown clearly in the
photographs here. Are they supposed to be foot
rests, or do they have some other purpose?

Jim,

I am not sure on the depressons, but they may be for mounting a Machine gun pedestal. With that said there are not any reinforcement areas on the frame or tub to mount a pedestal.

That appears to be a nice bed in the tub.

They are from the civvy tub stamping for the civilian rear seat. Willys just left them there unused.

Does anyone have a line on a good rear seat for my M38? It came without the rear bench seat and I would like to get that eventually. Makes it easier to have friends along for a ride too.
I know that Beachwood Canvas sells them but..... Thanks!

The same seat was used in both the M38 and the M38A1. MD Juan makes them as well. If you shop the used market then it would be wise to bone up on what each model seat looks like.

What's the going rate on the rear seats?
I also saw and read the link to making your own version and was thinking that 1/2 in. iron pipe threaded would be more sturdy and cheaper - these days - than copper.

Since you are not looking for a show stopper pick up one of the M151 rear seats and narrow it to fit. A lot easier then building from scratch.

The repop rear seats are about $200 now, I believe.

I can't answer your question from that photo. I can only see two of the eight required brackets. That's $200 for only the frame. Another $150 for cushions. A used M151 seat with cushions is about $75.

I see your point.
I'll take a closer look when I'm back in town after Labor Day and see what the bed has for attachment points. Right now it's under piles of tarps and replacement parts for the motor, brakes, etc. The rear seat is a later addition/change. $75 for a seat with cushions that can be made to work for the time being is a nice difference to $400+ for a correct seat and cushions. Someday down the road maybe.
